Protective suits from Franz Mensch

Protective suits cover the entire body and thus provide effective all-round protection. They are part of the personal protective equipment (PPE) and must meet all legal requirements. Depending on the intended use and the prevailing hazards, protective coveralls have to perform differently. That's why they come in a wide variety of designs: From air-permeable disposable coveralls or painters' coveralls made of lightweight nonwoven materials, which are primarily worn to protect against dirt, to dense virus protection coveralls and chemical protection coveralls, which protect against hazardous liquids and infections. Fire retardant coveralls specifically for working with sparks are also available. Buy coveralls with a hood for greater protection because the head and neck are also covered.

PPE - Categories for protective suits

The PPE Directive basically divides protective equipment into three categories. Overalls and protective suits are also classified here and correspond to either category I or category III:

  • Protective suits CAT 1 or Category I protect against minimal risks. These include painter suits, work coveralls, disposable coveralls made of PP nonwoven, which are worn primarily as protection against contamination. They are air-permeable and available both with and without hoods.
  • Protective suits CAT 3 or Category III aprons protect from irreversible and lethal risks. They are particularly tight and protect the body from liquids, germs, viruses, particles and other hazardous substances. With Cat3 protective suits, you are reliably protected against corrosive injuries or infections.

Types of protective suits and coveralls

  • Type 4 (EN 1512) Spray-tight protective clothing
  • Type 5 (EN 1398-2) Particle-proof protective clothing
  • Type 6 (EN 13034) Limited splashproof protective clothing
  • EN 1149-1/-5 Antistatic, Part 1: Surface resistance, Part 5: Material requirements
  • EN 14126 Barrier to infectious materials, biological hazards, etc. Hazards

How to put on your protective suit correctly

When you take the coverall out of the packaging, first check that everything is in order and, for example, that all seams are intact. Tip: Start comfortably seated and tuck your trouser legs into your socks before putting on the coverall so that nothing slips later. Now step into the coverall feet first. Then slip into your boots and pull the leg cuffs of the coverall over your boots. Stand up and now slip into the sleeves. Zipper halfway up and if necessary, put on your respirator and goggles now. Then put on the hood and close the zipper completely. In the case of very high-quality protective suits, the zipper is still taped with a flap.

How to take off your protective suit properly

Open all bonds, the bonded flap and the zipper. Touch the coverall only on the non-contaminated inside and take it off turned inside out. If you are wearing gloves, strip them off along with the sleeves. Then slip your feet out of the coverall and strip off your shoes at the same time. Fold the coverall so that the outside is completely wrapped inward. Dispose of the coverall immediately and disinfect your hands thoroughly.
