Sugarcane
Sugar cane is the main raw material for sugar production. The bagasse is what remains. It can be processed into disposable tableware. Sugar cane tableware is light, water-resistant, oil- and grease-resistant, suitable for microwave and refrigerator and heat-resistant. There are natural brown or bright white products made from bleached bagasse.
Sugarcane
Sugarcane- what is it actually?
Sugarcane belongs to the sweet grass family and grows in the tropical and subtropical climate zones of our earth. The plants grow to a height of about 3 to 6 metres and their stalks have a diameter of 2 - 5 cm. The sugarcane plants are picked and then pressed. The juice obtained is processed into cane sugar. What remains is a fibrous fraction: the so-called bagasse. With the addition of water and natural binding agents, the bagasse is ground to a pulp and then pressed into different shapes. This is how sustainable organic plates, organic lunch boxes and organic cups are made of sugarcane.
Is sugarcane tableware biodegradable?
Yes, products made from sugarcane are made of plant-based materials and are biodegradable and compostable after use. Composting generates valuable humus as an end product.
Advantages of organic tableware made of bagasse
Organic plates and food boxes made of bagasse are an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional disposable tableware, which is often made of plastic or polystyrene. Bagasse is a renewable resource made from the fibres of sugarcane, making it a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative. Here are some of the advantages of organic tableware made of sugarcane:
- biodegradable: organic tableware made of bagasse is biodegradable and can be composted industrially. Unlike conventional disposable plastic tableware, which takes hundreds of years to degrade, organic tableware made from sugarcane decomposes in a matter of weeks or months.
- environmentally friendly: bagasse is from a waste product that is produced during the production of sugar. By using bagasse as a raw material, we reuse a valuable waste product and reduce the environmental impact of disposing of sugarcane waste.
- heat-resistant and cold-resistant: organic bagasse tableware is heat-resistant and can be used in both the microwave and the oven - ideal, for example, for reheating leftovers from a restaurant. What's more, you can put food boxes made of sugarcane in the fridge or even freeze them - just as you would with packaging made of plastic.
- stable and robust: organic tableware made of bagasse is extremely robust and is therefore ideal for use at events or outdoors. It is waterproof and also suitable for liquid foods such as soups, sauces or salads.
- tasteless: organic bagasse tableware is tasteless and does not affect the taste of food. Unlike conventional disposable plastic or polystyrene tableware, which often has an unpleasant smell or taste, organic bagasse tableware is a hygienic and healthy option for food use..
Bagasse vs. PLA: Which organic material is better?
Whether it's takeaway boxes, cups or plates: bagasse is able to completely replace disposable plastic tableware. Bagasse decomposes much faster than PLA and is more heat-resistant. It is therefore even more suitable for hot food and drinks, e.g. as coffee-to-go cups. PLA, on the other hand, can be produced transparently. Food packaging made of PLA is therefore ideal for sales counters or for products with viewing windows when the contents must be visible to the consumer.
