Cellulose
Cellulose is often extracted from wood and is an important raw material for paper production. Cellulose is an excellent material for compostable coffee cups, paper drinking straws, paper plates, organic napkins, sustainable hygiene papers such as toilet paper, paper towels and cleaning paper. Also look out for the FSC® label.

Origin of cellulose: Sustainability from nature
Cellulose is obtained from plant fibres, mainly from wood, but often also from rapidly renewable plants such as bamboo or sugar cane. The process of cellulose extraction is environmentally friendly and resource-efficient, creating a sustainable cycle.
How is cellulose produced?
The process begins with the selection of suitable wood species, often from rapidly renewable trees, to ensure sustainability. The wood is first shredded and debarked to be further processed into so-called wood pulp. The wood pulp is treated with caustic soda and sulphur dioxide in a cooking process to isolate the cellulose fibres and remove impurities.
The resulting cellulose fibres are not yet pure white, so a bleaching process follows. Various bleaching agents such as chlorine or hydrogen peroxide are used here. Modern production plants are increasingly using more environmentally friendly bleaching processes to minimise ecological impact.
The processed pulp is washed and cleaned to remove the remaining chemicals. The pulp is then dewatered through screens and presses to remove excess liquids. The resulting pulp is dried and further processed into rolls, sheets or pellets, depending on the intended use.

Advantages of organic disposable tableware made from cellulose: Sustainable and hygienic
- environmentally friendly: cellulose is biodegradable and helps to reduce the use of non-recyclable plastics.
- versatile: products made of cellulose are suitable for a wide range of occasions - be it in daily catering operations, at events or in catering.
- hygienic and safe: our organic products are manufactured under strict quality standards. Cellulose is a natural raw material that is ideally suited for contact with food. Drinking straws, cups and co. made of cellulose are designed for single use. This means that every guest receives a hygienically fresh product and contamination is avoided.
- Positive eco-balance: the cultivation and extraction of cellulose has a lower environmental impact compared to conventional materials, which contributes to a positive eco-balance.

Paper drinking straws from NatureStar are very durable and have a 3-layer paper. This makes the drinking straws very stable, so that they keep their shape for several hours in cold drinks.
How long do paper drinking straws last?
The drinking straws from NatureStar are particularly stable thanks to the 3-ply paper and high-quality workmanship. They keep their shape in cold drinks for several hours.
Are paper drinking straws also suitable for hot drinks?
Paper drinking straws are primarily suitable for cold drinks. Nevertheless, our straws last about 10 minutes in mixed coffee drinks and are more suitable for stirring than for drinking.
Can paper straws be printed?
Yes, individual printing of drinking straws is possible at Franz Mensch. We print with up to four colours from a run of 100,000 to 300,000 pieces. Important to note: Logos could be cut off during printing. Therefore, a continuous motif is recommended for printing.
