Things to know about SARS-CoV-2 rapid tests
Good to know: Total sensitivity
Rapid antigen tests that help detect SARS-CoV-2 infection vary significantly in quality. An evaluation conducted by the Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI) shows that the demonstrated overall sensitivity of the analyzed tests ranges from 0 to 100%.
The overall sensitivity of a test expresses how high the probability is that an infected person will get a positive test result, regardless of the viral load they carry.
Difference sensitivity and specificity
Sensitivity: This value indicates how reliably the test detects an infection. The higher the sensitivity, the more reliably an infected person is detected and receives a positive result. Good tests have a sensitivity of over 90 percent and are thus equivalent to or only a few percentage points worse than laboratory tests.
Specificity: This figure indicates how accurately the test reacts to covid-19 viruses, so that other pathogens are not falsely identified. Thus, a positive test result will only be indicated if it really is a Covid 19 infection. Non-infected persons receive a negative result.
