Safety shoes from Franz Mensch

Safety shoes and the prevention of accidents play an important role in occupational safety. The requirements that safety shoes must meet are determined by the respective work area and are part of the "personal protective equipment (PPE)" of an employee. When choosing the right shoe, one quickly encounters many questions: What is the difference between safety shoes, professional shoes and work shoes? What do the abbreviations SRC or s3 mean? And are there also work shoes without a steel toe cap?

Read here for an overview of safety classes and everything you need to know about work shoes and safety footwear:

  • Safety shoes vs. work shoes - Here's the difference:
Safety shoes, unlike work shoes, have a sewn-in toe cap. Colloquially, this is often referred to as a steel toe cap, although the protective toe cap can also be made of plastic or another material. The only important thing is that it fully complies with the standard requirements. The protective cap of a safety shoe is firmly attached to the shoe and cannot be removed without destroying the shoe. A safety shoe is a safety shoe if the protective toe cap can withstand a load of 200 joules. 200 joules corresponds to a force generated by a 1kg weight from a 20m drop, or a 20kg weight from a 1m drop.

The terms work shoes and professional shoes are general. Professional shoes or work shoes are usually without steel toe caps. Often one speaks in areas such as the kitchen or in hospital and care of work shoes or professional shoes.

  • What should be considered when choosing safety shoes?
    • SB = basic requirement for work shoes with steel toe cap
    • S1 = safety shoes with closed heel area
    • S1P = safety shoes with strong profile (profiled outsole) and anti-puncture sole
    • S2 = waterproof safety shoes
    • S3 = safety shoes s3 have a profiled, puncture-resistant outsole and are waterproof
    • S4 = safety boots, with high shaft, especially waterproof

The employers' liability insurance associations provide useful assistance. They have drawn up a whole series of rules for safety and health at work. BG Rule 191 is specifically devoted to the use of knee and foot protection and identifies possible hazards. The most important criteria are derived from the safety classes:

    • Anti-slip soles: Marking as of 2007
Slips and trips are among the most common causes of accidents. That's why safety footwear needs an anti-slip sole. The requirements for the slip resistance of work shoes are regulated by DIN 4843, with two test methods:
      • SRA = Slip resistance on ceramic tile floor with sodium lauryl sulfate solution (NaLS).
      • SRC = Slip resistance on ceramic tile floor with sodium lauryl sulfate solution (NaLS) and on steel floor with glycerine.

    • Additional properties of safety shoes
Many work shoes carry other markings in addition to the safety class. The following overview shows what the abbreviations mean:
      • A = Antistatic
      • E = Energy absorption capacity in the heel area (cushioning in the heel area to relieve the strain on the ankles and prevent accidents)
      • P = Puncture-resistant sole (protection when stepping on pointed or sharp-edged objects, e.g. nails)
      • CI = cold insulation (protection against cold up to -20 °C)
