The testing procedure specifically checks whether protective gloves are effective against microorganisms, including viruses. This standard is especially relevant for disposable gloves used in medical, laboratory, and industrial environments. Details on Virus Testing According to EN 374-5:2016 VIRUS for Virus-Proof Nitrile Gloves

The EN374-5:2016 standard defines the requirements for gloves to protect the user against bacteria, fungi, and viruses. In the case of virus impermeability, gloves are tested on their ability to prevent the penetration of viruses, which is crucial for safety in environments where viruses are present. This is referred to as permeation. The tests use a model virus that resembles actual viruses in its small size (diameter about 27 nm) and shape.

Testing Procedure::

  1. The glove to be tested is stretched over a vessel that contains a special testing liquid.
  2. The outside of the glove is coated with a liquid containing the model virus under defined conditions.
  3. After a specified exposure time, the inner liquid of the vessel is analyzed to determine if viruses have penetrated from the outside to the inside of the glove.
  4. If viruses are detected inside the vessel, the glove is not considered virus-proof. No viruses mean that the glove has successfully blocked penetration.

The evaluation is based on the "breakthrough time," i.e., the duration it takes for the viruses to penetrate the glove material. A longer breakthrough time indicates better protective effectiveness.

Gloves that pass the test are marked with the symbol of a virus under the shield of EN374. This symbol indicates that the glove is proven to be virus-proof according to the criteria of EN374-5:2016.
