Disinfection or cleaning: What is the difference?
The main difference between disinfection and cleaning is the objective and effect.
Cleaning:
- Goal: To remove visible dirt, stains, dust and other contaminants from surfaces, objects or hands.
- Procedure: Contaminants are removed by mechanical action (e.g., wiping, scrubbing) and the use of cleaning agents.
- Result: A clean, but not necessarily germ-free surface. Cleaning reduces the number of microorganisms but does not eliminate them completely.
Disinfection:
- Goal: To kill or inactivate microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi on surfaces or objects to prevent the transmission of disease.
- Procedure: Use of special chemical agents (disinfectants) or physical methods (e.g., heat, UV light) with the goal of destroying or rendering harmless microorganisms.
